It is important to maintain clean and properly draining gutters on your home to prevent water damage. Common side effects of clogged and over-flowing gutters include rotten wood, ground erosion, and water entry into basements and foundations. Dirty and wet gutters also provide ideal breeding grounds for small pests such as mosquitoes. On most homes, the gutters and downspouts should be cleaned from 1 to 4 times per year.
Many types of gutter covers and screen devices are available to help keep gutters and downspouts clean. Generally, gutter covers fit into two categories: solid gutter covers and screens. Each requires different maintenance. Be wary of lifetime warranties which are only good as long as the company remains in business.
Covers may be manufactured out of aluminum, steel, or vinyl. Steel is very durable, but will eventually rust. Aluminum (although a little thinner than steel) is much more weather resistant and will not rust. Vinyl products should be avoided as they will deteriorate quickly in the heat of the summer and in the sun’s UV rays.
Screens - with all screens it will be necessary to clean your gutters regularly. A well-installed and high quality screen will maintain the gutters’ ability to handle and drain water between cleanings.
Solid gutter cover refers to a solid (usually aluminum) cover which installs under the shingles and extends to cover the gutter completely; it rolls into the gutter on the front to create an area where water tension will cary the water into the gutter, but the debris will fall off. A few of the best products will work well on many homes, but not on all houses, or in all areas. It may also be necessary to clean debris off the roofing annually even if solid gutter covers are installed.
